Marquess of Ely is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The historic family seat of the Marquesses was Loftus Hall near Hook in County Wexford, Ireland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on December 29, 1800 for Charles Loftus, 1st Earl of Ely .

He had already been elevated to Baron Loftus , of Loftus Hall in the County of Wexford on June 28, 1785 , Viscount Loftus , of Ely on December 28, 1789 , and Earl of Ely on March 2, 1794 . All of these titles belong to the Peerage of Ireland. From his father Sir John Tottenham, 1st Baronet, he had inherited the title of Tottenham Baronet , of Tottenham Green in the County of Wexford, on December 29, 1786 , which had been awarded to this on December 18, 1780 in the Baronetage of Ireland. On January 19, 1801 he was also promoted to Baron Loftus , of Long Loftus in the County of York . This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 .
