Charles John Tottenham, 8th Marquess of Ely (born May 30, 1913 in Binsted , Hampshire , † February 1, 2006 ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

He was the son of George Leonard Tottenham (1879–1928) and Cécile Elizabeth Burra. After the early death of his father, his mother moved with him and his siblings to Geneva , Switzerland , where he attended the Collège de Genève and later to Kingston (Ontario) in Canada, where he completed his studies at Queen's University as a Bachelor of Arts ( BA).

After completing his studies, he first worked as a French teacher and librarian at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston and as a translator for an insurance company until he switched to the Trinity College School in Port Hope (Ontario) in 1937 , where he became the rector of the associated Boulden House -Preschool advancement. In 1981 he retired from school.

When his third degree uncle George Loftus, 7th Marquess of Ely, died childless on May 31, 1969, he inherited his title of nobility as 8th Marquess of Ely , as well as the subordinate title of 8th Earl of Ely , 8th Viscount Loftus of Ely, 8th. Baron Loftus of Loftus Hall, 8th Baron Loftus of Long Loftus and 9th Baronet, of Tottenham Green. A seat in the British House of Lords was associated with the title Baron Loftus of Long Loftus until 1999 .

In his first marriage in 1938 he married Katherine Elizabeth Craig († 1975). He had four children with her:

After the death of his first wife, he married Elspeth Ann Hay († 1996) in 1978. This marriage remained childless.
