Dieter Göpel (born August 14, 1950 ) is a former German soccer player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he was active for FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt .

Athletic career

At the beginning of the 1970/71 season, the 1.84 m tall midfielder Dieter Göpel was delegated from the third-rate district division Motor Weimar to the upper division representative Rot-Weiß Erfurt. There he was first used in the district league Red-White II. Only when several players failed in the second half of the season, Göpel was regularly used in the league. In twelve games he played both in midfield and attack and also scored his first league goal. At the end of the season, the FC had to relegate to the GDR league . There Göpel developed into a regular player, he played 21 of the 22 point games and all eight promotion games in which Red-White fought for promotion. Back in the league, Göpel was injured so badly after twelve league appearances in the first half of the season that he had to take a break for almost a year. After only six league games in 1973/74, mostly as a substitute, he only moved back into the player base in the 1974/75 season. Until 1982/83 he was missing, now playing as a defender, only in a few games in the league. When he ended his career at FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt at the age of 33, he had made 238 appearances in the major league and scored 22 goals. There are also 40 games in the GDR league (including 13 and one goal for RWE II). For the 1983/84 season Göpel returned to Motor Weimar. There he was first used in 14 of 22 GDR league games and then rose with the team in the district league. After the immediate resurgence, he played two more seasons with Motor Weimar, in which he again completed 63 of the 68 played point games as a regular.
