Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport

Viscount Bridport , of Cricket St. Thomas in the County of Somerset , is a hereditary British title of nobility , bestowed twice and worn by members of a branch of the famous Hood family.

Awards

The title was first created on June 16, 1800 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Admiral Alexander Hood , the younger brother of Admiral Samuel Hood, who was also British Admiral , 1st Viscount Hood . This had participated in several successful naval battles of the First Coalition War . When he died in 1814 without a male descendant, the title expired.

The second award took place on July 6, 1868 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to a great-grandson of the brother of the first Viscount Alexander Nelson Hood . He was a general in the British Army and a high-ranking servant at Queen Victoria's court .

Subordinate title

The first Viscount received the title Baron Bridport , who belongs to the Peerage of Ireland , since 1794 . This was given with a special note that, in the absence of male descendants, it could also be passed on to the great-nephew Samuel Hood and his male descendants and, in the most alternative, to the male descendants of uncle Alexander Hood. This also happened when the first Viscount died. Today this title is listed as a subordinate title to the Viscountswürde.

Other titles

The first Viscount received the title of Baron Bridport , of Cricket St. Thomas in the County of Somerset , in 1796 . This dignity, which belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain and, unlike the Irish title, was linked to an automatic seat in the House of Lords , expired in 1814 with his death.

The second Baron Bridport married Lady Charlotte Nelson, 3rd Duchess of Bronte , which brought the Sicilian Duchy of Bronte into the Hood family from her famous uncle and naval hero Admiral Lord Nelson . Their only surviving son was then raised to Viscount Bridport in 1868 .
