Baron Monteagle is a hereditary British title of nobility that has been awarded three times, namely once each in the Peerage of England , the Peerage of Ireland and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards

The title was first created on November 23, 1514 in the Peerage of England for Sir Edward Stanley , the second-born son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby . At the death of his grandson, the 3rd Baron , in 1581, who left no sons, the title fell to his daughter Elizabeth as 4th Baroness, who married Edward Parker, 12th Baron Morley . Their son, the 5th Baron Monteagle , inherited the title of Baron Morley from his father in 1618 . Since then, both titles have been united and fell between the descendants of two of his aunts when the 7th Baron Monteagle died childless on July 15, 1697 in Abeyance .

The second bestowal was on September 10, 1760 in the Peerage of Ireland, the title of Baron Mounteagle (also Mount Eagle ), of Westport in the County of Mayo , bestowed on John Browne . This was also elevated to Viscount Westport on August 24, 1768 and Earl of Altamont on December 4, 1771 . His grandson, the 3rd Earl, was also raised to Marquess of Sligo on December 29, 1800 and finally to Baron Mounteagle , of Westport in the County of Mayo, on February 20, 1806 . Unlike his other (Irish) titles, the latter barony belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and was linked to a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 . The two baronies Mounteagle have since been subordinate titles of the respective Marquess of Sligo.
