Marquess of Sligo is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The family home of the Marquesses is Westport House near Westport in County Mayo in Ireland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was on December 29, 1800 by King George III. created for Irish politician John Browne, 3rd Earl of Altamont .

The 1st Marquess had the titles of 3rd Earl of Altamont , in the County of Mayo, 3rd Viscount Westport , of Westport in the County of Mayo, and 3rd Baron Mount Eagle , of Westport in the County of by his father as early as 1780 Mayo, given to his grandfather on December 4, 1771, August 24, 1768 and September 10, 1760, respectively, in the Peerage of Ireland.

On February 20, 1806, the 1st Marquess was also bestowed the title of Baron Monteagle , of Westport in the County of Mayo. This belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, in contrast to the Irish titles, was directly entitled to a seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 .

The 6th Marquess inherited in 1916 when the childless death of his relatives Hubert de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde the title 4th Earl of Clanricarde that on 29 December 1800, the Peerage of Ireland the father of the second Marquess of Sligo awarded had been. All of the aforementioned titles are still subordinate titles of the respective marquess.
