Earl of Clanricarde
Earl of Clanricarde is a hereditary title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of Ireland .
Awards and other titles
The title was first bestowed on July 1, 1543 for Ulick na gCeann Burke , along with the subordinate title Baron of Dunkellin , both in the Peerage of Ireland.
His great-grandson, the 4th Earl, was raised to Viscount Tunbridge and Baron of Somerhill on April 3, 1624 , and to Earl of St. Albans , Viscount Galway and Baron of Imanney on August 23, 1628 . All of these titles belonged to the Peerage of England .
His son, the 5th Earl, was elevated to Marquess of Clanricarde on February 21, 1646 in the Peerage of Ireland . Around 1650 he also inherited the title 3. Viscount Bourke of Clanmories, created on April 20, 1629 in the Peerage of Ireland from his cousin . At his death in 1657 the marquessate and the English titles of 1624 and 1628 lapsed. The remaining Irish titles were inherited by his second cousin as 6th Earl.
The 12th Earl was raised on August 17, 1789 in the second bestowal in the Peerage of Ireland to Marquess of Clanricarde . The marquessate expired on his death in 1797, the other titles his brother inherited as 13th Earl.
On December 29, 1800, the 13th Earl was again awarded the title of Earl of Clanricarde in the Peerage of Ireland, this time with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, he was also given the title of Earl of Clanricarde to his daughters Lady Hester Catherine de Burgh (wife des Howe Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo ) and Lady Emily de Burgh and their male offspring are inheritable.
The 14th Earl was raised on November 26, 1825 in the third bestowal in the Peerage of Ireland to Marquess of Clanricarde and on December 13, 1826 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Baron Somerhill , of Somerhill in the County of Kent . A hereditary seat in the House of Lords was associated with the latter title .
With the death of his younger son, the 2nd Marquess and 15th Earl in 1916, all his titles were extinguished, with the exception of the Earldom of Clanricarde of 1800, which according to the special note inherited by his cousin, George Browne, 6th Marquess of Sligo , one Grandson of Lady Hester Catherine de Burgh. The second earldom has since been a minor title to the Marquess of Sligo .
