Howe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo KP , PC (born May 18, 1788 in London , † January 26, 1845 in Tunbridge Wells ), was an Irish - British nobleman and colonial governor.

Life

He was the only child of John Browne, 1st Marquess of Sligo (1756-1809) and Lady Louisa Howe (1767-1817), daughter of Admiral Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title Viscount Westport until 1800 and the courtesy title Earl of Altamont from 1800 to 1809 .

He attended Eton College and completed his studies at Jesus College of Cambridge University in 1808 as a Master from.

When his father died on June 2, 1809, he inherited his title as 2nd Marquess of Sligo and was also a member of the House of Lords due to the subordinate title Baron Monteagle . Shortly afterwards he was accepted into the Privy Council for Ireland and on November 11, 1809, he was made Knight Companion des Order of Saint Patrick .

He was a friend of Lord Byron and Robert Peel . In 1810 he visited Lord Byron in Greece and together they traveled from Athens to Corinth . From there he went to Veli Pascha von Morea , where he also met the British adventurer Hester Stanhope . Veli Pasha gave him permission to dig in Mycenae . Lord Sligo removed the half-columns from the treasury of Atreus , for which he and Veli Pascha were later accused of vandalizing ancient monuments. On the ship Pylades he had his over 1000 archaeological artifacts disembarked for Ireland.

From 1831 to 1845 he held the office of Lord Lieutenant of County Mayo , Ireland . From 1834 to 1836 he was Governor General and Vice-Admiral of Jamaica . In 1834 he was also admitted to the British Privy Council.

He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery , London. The village of Sligoville in Jamaica is named after him.

Marriage and offspring

On March 4, 1816, he married Lady Hester Catherine de Burgh (1800-1878), the eldest daughter of John de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricarde . With her he had six sons and eight daughters:
