from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Veli Pascha von Morea (* around 1771 in Tepelena , † 1822 in Istanbul ) was the second son of Tepedelenli Ali Pascha and Emine Aslan-Pashali, a daughter of Ali Kaplan Pascha. He was of Albanian descent and the Sublime Porte bestowed on him the title of Pasha of Albania.

Life

At the age of 17 Veli Pascha was appointed Sanjakbey of Trikala . In 1798 he married Zeivenie, a daughter of Ibrahim Pasha von Berat . His second wife was Zybeide H. Vlora, the daughter of Sylejman Pascha. He was very educated and spoke the Albanian, Greek, Turkish and Italian languages.

On September 3, 1803 he led his father's troops against the Sulioten in the war and defeated them. From 1804 to 1806/7 and from 1812 to 1819 he was in command of Thessaly . There he built two palaces, one in Desiani (today Aetolofos) south of Mount Ossa and the second in Tirnavos , 14 km north of Larisa . From 1806/7 to 1812 he was Ottoman governor of Morea with seat in Tripolitza and Pascha with three horse tails . Veli Pascha respected the Christian inhabitants in his sphere of influence and imposed heavy penalties on the killing of a Christian. In 1810 he fought in the Russo-Turkish War on the Danube against Russians who inflicted great losses on him.

After Veli Pasha's father was defeated and killed by Sultan Mahmud II in 1822 , Veli Pasha was also captured. He was taken to Istanbul and after witnessing the beheading of his son Mehmet, he was also executed in the same way. His body was buried at the Silivritor (source gate). In 2006, his grave was discovered in the Zeytinburnu Ayvalık Cemetery in Istanbul.

Veli Pascha is said to have plundered ancient sites out of greed for profit. In addition, he is said to have given Lord Elgin and Lord Sligo the treasure house of Atreus in Mycenae for plunder. In April 1808 he had a Mohammedan dug in Mycenae. He discovered the grave of Klytaimnestra and in it several graves with skeletons and, as grave goods, gold and silver jewelry, valuable stones and gems . About 25 statues and a marble table were also discovered. Everything was transported to Tripolitza, but Veli Pasha allegedly had the remains and gems thrown away. He sold all other finds to western travelers for 80,000 gros .
