Spyros Iakovidis

Spyros Evstathios Iakovidis ( Greek Σπύρος Ευστάθιος Ιακωβίδης ) (* 1923 in Athens ; † June 16, 2013 ibid) was a Greek classical archaeologist . His research area was in particular the Mycenaean archeology.

Life

Spyros Iakovidis studied archeology at the University of Athens ( BA 1946, Dr. phil. 1962), worked from 1952 to 1954 as an ancient curator and from 1970 to 1974 as professor of archeology at the University of Athens. He taught as a visiting professor at the University of Marburg from 1976 to 1977 and in 1977 at the University of Heidelberg . From 1977 to 1978 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and from 1979 to 1991 Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia .

He led excavations in Athens, Eleusis , Pylos , Thira , Perati , Gla and, over a period of 50 years, in Mycenae .

Spyros Iakovidis was a member of the Academy of Athens , the Athens Archaeological Society and the German Archaeological Institute .

Spyros Iakovidis volunteered to protect and hide the treasures of the National Archaeological Museum after the Italian offensive in October 1940 and before the German troops marched into Athens . During the German occupation he was a member of the resistance organization of Napoleon Zervas . For this he was later awarded the National Resistance Medal and the Grand Commander (Ανώτερος Ταξιάρχης) of the Order of the Phoenix .

Spyros Iakovidis was married to the writer Athina Kakouri .
