Viscount Gormanston

Viscount Gormanston is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The historic family seat of the Viscounts was Gormanston Castle near Drogheda in County Meath until the 1940s .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on August 7, 1478 for Robert Preston, 4th Baron Gormanston . He had inherited the title of Baron Gormanston as early as 1450 , which was given to his ancestor in the Peerage of Ireland between 1365 and 1370.

His great-great-great-grandson, the 6th Viscount, served as general of the rebel Irish Catholics in 1641 and 1642 and was ostracized for this after his death in 1643. The ban was lifted in 1660 and the title restored in favor of his son as the 7th Viscount. He was a supporter of King Jacob II during the Glorious Revolution and was ostracized for high treason shortly after his death. It was not until 1800 that his great-great-great-nephew obtained the retroactive lifting of the ban and the restoration of the title for him as the 12th Viscount.

His son, the 13th Viscount, was also raised to Baron Gormanston , of Whitewood in the County of Meath, on December 8, 1868 . This title was, in contrast to the Irish titles, a seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 .

Today's title holder is his great-great-great-grandson Jenico Preston as 17th Viscount.
