Earl of Portarlington is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland , named after the small town of Portarlington in County Laois .

The Earls' family seat was formerly Emo Court at Emo in County Laois and is now Gledswood House near Melrose in Roxburghshire .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was bestowed on June 21, 1785 to John Dawson, 2nd Viscount Carlow . He had inherited the titles Viscount Carlow , of Carlow, and Baron Dawson , of Dawson's Court in the Queen's County from his father in 1779 , which had been awarded to his father on July 24, 1776 and May 29, 1770 in the Peerage of Ireland . The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Viscount Carlow as heir apparent .

Today's owner of the title is his descendant George Dawson-Damer as 7th Earl.
