Marquess of Lansdowne is a hereditary British noble title in the Peerage of Great Britain , named after the village of Lansdowne, now Lansdown a borough of Bath .

The Marquesses' family home is Bowood House in Wiltshire . The family also previously owned Lansdowne House in Berkeley Square , London .

Award

The title was created in 1784 for William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne . He had been Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1782/83 .

Subordinate title

Subordinate titles to the Marquess of Lansdowne are Earl Wycombe , of Chipping Wycombe in the County of Buckingham , (created 1784), Earl of Kerry (created 1723), Earl of Shelburne (created 1753), Viscount Calne and Calstone (created 1784), Viscount Clanmaurice (created 1723), Viscount FitzMaurice (created 1751), Baron Wycombe , of Chipping Wycombe in the County of Buckingham (created 1760), Baron Kerry and Lixnaw (created 1223) and Baron Dunkeron (created 1751). The titles Earl Wycombe , Viscount Calne and Calstone and Baron Wycombe belong to the Peerage of Great Britain, while all other titles are assigned to the Peerage of Ireland .

The title Earl of Shelburne had already been created in 1719, but became extinct after the death of the first Earl .

Since 1818, the titles Earl of Kerry and Viscount Clanmaurice have been listed as subordinate titles that had previously been worn by an older branch of the family.

The titles Earl of Kerry and Earl of Shelburne are used alternately as a courtesy title for the title heir .

Another title

The fifth marquess inherited the title of Lord Nairne from his mother in 1895 . He belongs to the Peerage of Scotland and can also be inherited in the female line. When the seventh marquess died, this title fell to his sister, while the marquessate with the other subordinate titles passed to a cousin.
