August Ephraim Kramer

August Ephraim Kramer (born February 2, 1817 in Nordhausen ; † March 18, 1885 there ), also Augustus Ephraim Kramer , was a German inventor. In 1846 he further developed the pointer telegraph developed by Charles Wheatstone in 1839 for transmitting messages.

Life

After graduating from high school, Kramer studied mathematics and natural sciences in Leipzig and Berlin and completed his doctorate in 1839. From 1840 he taught mathematics and natural sciences at the grammar school in Nordhausen. In addition, he deals intensively with experimental physics. In 1846 he presented his invention, the electromagnetic pointer telegraph, for the first time , first in Nordhausen and then in November of the same year in Berlin. There is great interest in this easy-to-use communication tool. In the following year, he was commissioned with the installation by various railway companies. In 1849 he finally gave up his education in order to devote himself entirely to the further development of the device. In view of the growing competition and the superiority of the more efficient Morse code telegraphy , however, Kramer ended his activities in this field a few years later. He withdrew into private life, married in 1853 and had a son in 1864.

Appreciation

In Nordhausen a street is called "August-Kramer-Straße".

On January 19, 2006, the engineering teaching and research facility of the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, previously under the working title “Competence Center for Material Flow, Energy and Space Management”, was named “August Kramer Institute” (AKI).
