Baron Auckland is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Ireland and the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards

The title was first created on November 18, 1789 for the diplomat and politician William Eden . He had previously been ambassador to France and the Netherlands, among others. Although he was English, he was awarded in the Peerage of Ireland so that he would not lose the seat in the British House of Commons , which he held at the time, in favor of a seat in the House of Lords .

After the end of his House of Commons mandate, he was also awarded the title of Baron Auckland , of West Auckland in the County of Durham , on May 22, 1793 . This title belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain and finally enabled the baron to take a seat in the British House of Lords.

Other titles

The 2nd Baron was a well-known politician and, among other things, Viceroy of India . He was made Earl of Auckland and Baron Eden , of Norwood in the County of Surrey in 1839 . Both titles expired ten years later when the Earl died unmarried.

The barons are also in the line of succession for the Eden Baronetcy , of West Auckland in the County of Durham, because the 1st Baron was a son of the 3rd Baronet. This title is currently held by the conservative politician John Eden, Baron Eden of Winton .
