West Auckland is a village in County Durham in north east England . It is on the A 688 about 4 km southwest of Bishop Auckland . The river Gaunless separates it from the neighboring village of Saint Helen Auckland .
The village was probably settled as early as the 11th century. With the start of coal mining in nearby Witton Park Colliery and in particular with the construction of the Stockton and Darlington Railway to transport this coal, the number of residents increased significantly. The maiden voyage of the train began on September 27, 1825 at the Brusselton-Höhe, around 2 km southeast of the village. The railway crossed the river on the Gaunless Bridge , the first iron railway bridge.
