Award

The title was created on July 25, 1776 by Letters patent for Sir Alexander Macdonald, 9th Baronet . Already in 1766 he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Sleat in the Isle of Skye in the County of Inverness , from his father , which was bestowed on his great-great-great-grandfather on May 28, 1625 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia.

The younger brother of the 2nd Baron inherited the lands of the Bosville family in Thorpe and Gunthwaite in Yorkshire through his mother in 1814 and took the surname Bosville on April 11, 1814 under a royal license . After he had inherited his childless brother as 3rd Baron Macdonald in 1824, he changed his family name with a royal license from July 20, 1824 to Bosville-Macdonald .

By decree of June 4, 1910, the Court of Sessions ruled that the Baronetcy at the death of the 3rd Baron in 1824 not to his son Godfrey, the 4th Baron, but to his older brother Alexander (1800–1847) as de iure 12 Baronet had fallen and his grandson Alexander (1865–1933) was now the 14th baronet. The former Alexander was considered legitimate under Scottish law, but born out of wedlock under Irish law. As a result, the then reigning 6th Baron had himself confirmed as head of the Macdonald clan by decree of the Lord Lyon King of Arms of June 30, 1910 and shortened his family name back to Macdonald .

Today's title holder has been his great-grandson Godfrey Macdonald as 8th Baron since 1970 .
