Earl of Cavan is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award

The title was created on April 15, 1647 for Charles Lambart, 2nd Baron Lambart . During the Irish Rebellion in 1641 , he had made a name for himself as a military leader in the fight against the Catholic rebels.

Subordinate title

Along with the earl dignity, the subordinate title Viscount Kilcoursie , of Kilcoursie in the King's County , was created in 1647 . The title also belongs to the Peerage of Ireland and is used as a courtesy title by the Earl's Heir Apparent .

The father of the first earl, Oliver Lambart , had already been awarded the title Baron Lambart , of Cavan in the County of Cavan , in the Peerage of Ireland in 1618 . The title is listed as a subordinate title to the Earl.
