Viscount Downe is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards

The title was first awarded on July 19, 1675 to Sir William Ducie, 3rd Baronet . Along with the Viscount title, he was awarded the subordinate title Baron Cloney . In addition, he had inherited the title of Baronet , of London, from his older brother in 1657 , which was bestowed on his father on November 28, 1629 in the Baronetage of England. His peerages became extinct on September 9, 1679 when he died without male offspring. The Baronetcy fell to his nephew. The Viscount's family seat was Tortworth Court near Thornbury in South Gloucestershire .

On February 19, 1681, the title for the House of Commons Sir John Dawnay was newly created. His great-grandson, the 5th Viscount, was raised to Baron Dawnay , of Cowick in the County of York , on June 9, 1796 in the Peerage of Great Britain . In contrast to the Irish titles, this title was associated with a seat in the British House of Lords , but already expired on February 18, 1832 when he died childless. The Viscountcy fell to his brother as the 6th Viscount. His grandson, the 8th Viscount, was also raised to Baron Dawnay , of Danby in the North Riding of the County of York in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on July 24, 1897 . This title entitled to a seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 . Today's title holder has been his great-great-grandson Richard Dawnay as the 12th Viscount since 2002 . The Viscount family residence is Wykeham Abbey in Scarborough , North Yorkshire .
