Viscount Galway
Viscount Galway (also Gallway ) is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded a total of four times, once in 1628 in the Peerage of England and three times, in 1687, 1692 and 1727, in the Peerage of Ireland . The title is named after the Irish city of Galway .
Awards, subordinate and other titles
In the first award, the title was created on August 23, 1628 in the Peerage of England for Richard Burke, 4th Earl of Clanricarde , together with the titles Earl of St. Albans and Baron of Imanney , which were also awarded to him at the same time, also belonging to the Peerage of England . He had inherited the titles of 4th Earl of Clanricarde and 4th Baron of Dunkellin , belonging to the Peerage of Ireland, from his father in 1601 , and on April 3, 1624 in the Peerage of England he had received the titles of Viscount Tunbridge and Baron Somerhill . His son, the 5th Earl of Clanricarde , was also raised to Marquess of Clanricarde on February 21, 1646 in the Peerage of Ireland . All of the named titles finally expired on his death in 1657.
In the second bestowal, the title was newly created on June 2, 1687 in the Peerage of Ireland for Ulick Bourke , together with the subordinate title Baron Tyaquin . Both titles expired on his death in 1691.
In the third award, the title was bestowed on November 25, 1692 in the Peerage of Ireland to the French diplomat and military Henri de Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny , together with the subordinate title of Baron Portarlington . On May 12, 1697 he was also raised to Earl of Galway . All three titles expired on his death in 1720.
In the fourth bestowal, the title was created on July 17, 1727 in the Peerage of Ireland for the House of Commons John Monckton . The title was awarded along with the subordinate title Baron Killard , of Killard of the County of Clare . His son, the 2nd Viscount, added his surname to Monckton-Arundell in 1769 as heir of his aunt Lady Frances Arundell . His great-great-great-grandson, the seventh Viscount was on July 4, 1887 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom the title Baron Monckton , of Serlby in the County of Nottingham awarded, with which a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords connected was. When his grandson, the 9th Viscount died in 1971, the Barony of Monckton became extinct, while his third uncle, as the 10th Viscount, inherited the remaining titles. In 1977 his brother won him as the 11th Viscount and after him in 1980 his second uncle as the 12th Viscount, the current title holder.
