Earl of Mexborough , of Lifford in the County of Donegal is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on February 11, 1766 for the House of Commons John Savile, 1st Baron Pollington . He was MP for Hedon (Yorkshire) from 1747 to 1754 and from 1761 to 1768 for Shoreham (Sussex). Along with Earldom he was awarded the subordinate title Viscount Pollington , of Ferns in the County of Wexford . As early as November 8, 1753, he had been raised to Baron Pollington , of Longford in the County of Longford .

Although the Englishman John Savile had no special connection to Ireland, the titles were given to him in the Peerage of Ireland so that he could keep his seat in the House of Commons and not instead get an automatic seat in the House of Lords , with titles in the Peerage of Great Britain would have been connected. It is noteworthy that the territorial dedication of the titles does not even refer to Irish but to English places, namely Mexborough and Pollington in Yorkshire .

The Earls' family seat was Methley Hall in Methley, southeast of Leeds , in Yorkshire, and has been Arden Hall , near Hawnby, in Yorkshire since 1897 .
