Viscount Massereene
Viscount Massereene , in the County of Antrim , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland . Since 1843 he has been associated with the title Viscount Ferrard .
Award, subordinate and other titles
The title was created on November 21, 1660 for the Anglo-Irish politician John Clotworthy . Along with the Viscount title, he was given the subordinate title of Baron Loughneugh , in the County of Antrim. Both titles were bestowed with the special addition that the titles could also be passed on to his son-in-law Sir John Skeffington, 4th Baronet, of Fisherwick , the husband of his daughter Mary Clotworthy, and his male descendants, as well as, in the absence of these, to his general heirs . The two titles are therefore the only remaining Irish titles that can also be inherited in the female line. When the 1st Viscount died, he was followed by his son-in-law John Skeffington, according to the special addition.
The 5th Viscount was elevated to Earl of Massereene on July 28, 1756 in the Peerage of Ireland . The earldom expired on the death of his grandson, the 4th Earl, on February 25, 1816. The Barony and Viscountcy fell to his daughter Harriet Skeffington as the 9th Viscountess.
She was married to Thomas Foster, 2nd Viscount Ferrard . He had inherited the titles Viscount Ferrard and Baron Oriel , of Collon , from his mother Margaretta Foster in 1824 , which had been created for them in the Peerage of Ireland on November 22, 1797 and June 5, 1790, respectively. In 1828 he had also inherited from his father John Foster (1740-1828) the title of Baron Oriel , of Ferrard in the County of Louth , which had been awarded to this on July 17, 1821 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . Their son inherited his parents in 1831 and 1843 as the 10th Viscountess Massereene and 3rd Viscount Ferrard. The two viscountcies have since been united. With the Barony Oriel, of Ferrard, in contrast to the Irish titles, a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords was connected until 1999 .
