Award

There is some controversy about the origin of the title. It is undisputedly recognized that Kingsale is the oldest barony of the Peerage of Ireland that still exists today and that the baron is thus the Prime Baron of Ireland . In addition, the title is the second oldest baron title in the history of the Peerage of Ireland after that of Baron Athenry .

The four main sources are John Lodge's The Peerage of Ireland , Edward MacLysaght's pedigree, which is registered with the Irish Genealogical Office , William Betham's pedigree at the British Museum and Debrett's. The subject of controversy is, in particular, the exact number of titleholders. According to Lodge, the current owner would be the 36th Baron Kingsale. MacLysaght leaves Edmund, Lodge's 4th Baron out, so the current Baron would be 35th. Debrett's list of title holders doesn't start until Lodge's 6th (MacLysaght's 5th) Baron, so the current peer would be the 31st holder of the title.

According to Lodge, the title was patented by Letters on May 29, 1223 from King Henry III. for Miles de Courcy († around 1230), probably the son of Sir John de Courcy . According to Debrett's, the title was first established around 1340 by Writ of Summons for Miles de Courcy (around 1286 – before 1344).

The following list shows the census according to Lodge, for which the Courcy family also advocates.
