Viscount Gage , of Castle Island in the County of Kerry of the Kingdom of Ireland , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The Viscount family residence is Firle Place in Firle near Lewes in East Sussex .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created for Thomas Gage on September 14, 1720 . This was an important supporter of the British in the pacification of Ireland. Along with the Viscount title, he was awarded the title of subordinate title of Baron Gage , of Castlebar in the County of Mayo . Through the title he became a member of the Irish, but not the British House of Lords , so he could be elected as a member of the British House of Commons , which he also belonged to from 1721 to 1754. In 1744 he inherited from a cousin the title of 8th Baronet , of Firle Place in the County of Sussex, which had been awarded to one of his ancestors on March 26, 1622 in the Baronetage of England .

His son, the 2nd Viscount , was an important commander in chief. He was raised to Baron Gage , of Firle in the County of Sussex on October 17, 1780 . This title belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain and was therefore associated with a seat in the British House of Lords. Since the 2nd Viscount remained childless, it was foreseeable that this title would expire upon his death. Therefore, on November 1, 1790, in the Peerage of Great Britain, he was also given the title of Baron Gage , of High Meadow in the County of Gloucester , with the special addition that, in the absence of his own descendants, this was also given to his nephew and general heir Henry Gage and his male descendants are inheritable. The barony of 1780 expired on his death on October 11, 1791 and the other titles fell to the aforementioned nephew as the 3rd Viscount.
