Castleisland ( Irish : Oileán Chiarraí ) is a country town in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland .

The place

Castleisland, spoken like Castle Island , got its name from a “Castle of the Island of Kerry” built in 1226. The place is known for the width of its main street, which in Ireland is only surpassed by O'Connell Street in Dublin .

The town is eight miles east of Tralee , the administrative seat of County Kerry, and had a population of 2,486 people at the 2016 census . There is a town partnership with Bannalec in Brittany .

Castleisland has an important cattle market for farmers in the area, where cattle are auctioned individually or in groups.

Transport links

Castleisland is at the southern end of the N21 national road , which runs from Limerick City (first as the N20) via Newcastle West into County Kerry. In Castleisland the N21 bends off to Tralee, while the N23 continues to the N22 to Killarney and via Macroom to Cork City . The position as an "outpost" on the way to the west and south of Kerry gave Castleisland the name Gateway to Kerry .

The city is no longer connected to rail transport in Ireland .

Attractions

With the Crag Cave , which was only discovered in 1983, Castleisland has one of the largest stalactite caves in Ireland, which extends over 4 km below the city. About a tenth of it is open to the public ( guided ) and is viewed by thousands of visitors every year.

Quote

"Not so much a town as a street between two fields." - this is how a well-known resident of the city, Con Houlihan, characterized the place.
