Macroom ( Irish Maigh Chromtha ) is a town in County Cork in the south-west of the Republic of Ireland . The Irish name Maigh Chromtha may mean "humped plain", but it can also refer to Crom Cruach , a pre-Christian Irish deity.

Macroom is on the N22 between Cork City and Killarney in a valley on the River Sullane, a tributary of the River Lee . Macroom is 30 miles southeast of Killarney and 38 miles west of Cork City. There is an hourly bus connection with Cork City every working day. The place is no longer connected to the rail traffic in Ireland ; to Cork Airport , the distance is about 45 km away.

The population of macrooms at the 2016 Census was 3765 people. Tourism is a major industry; In Knocknakilla , between Macroom and Millstreet a few kilometers further northeast, in the townland of Oughtihery , there is a 3,500-year-old megalithic complex Wedge Tomb by Bealick .

In 1650, the Battle of Macroom took place near the place .
