Marquess of Cholmondeley
Marquess of Cholmondeley ( [ˈtʃʌmli] ) is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The family's ancestral home is Houghton Hall and Cholmondeley Castle .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on November 22, 1815 for George James Cholmondeley, 4th Earl of Cholmondeley , who had served the crown for many years , including as Lord Steward . Together with the marquess title, he was also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the subordinate title Earl of Rocksavage , in the County Palatine of Chester , bestowed. As early as 1770 he had inherited the following titles from his grandfather, which had been bestowed on his ancestors:
- Viscount Cholmondeley , of Kells in the County of Meath , who had been bestowed on March 29, 1661 in the Peerage of Ireland to his great-great-grandfather Robert Cholmondeley ;
- Baron Cholmondeley , of Namptwich in the County of Chester, Earl of Cholmondeley and Viscount Malpas , in the County of Chester, the former on April 10, 1689, the latter both on December 29, 1706 in the Peerage of England to his great-great-uncle Hugh Cholmondeley, 2 Viscount Cholmondeley , with the note that his brother George and his descendants may also inherit the title;
- Baron Newborough , of Newborough in the County of Wexford , who on April 12, 1715 in the Peerage of Ireland, and Baron Newburgh , of Newburgh in the Isle of Anglesey , who on July 10, 1716 in the Peerage of Great Britain to his great-grandfather George Cholmondeley, 2nd Earl of Cholmondeley , had been awarded.
The eldest son of the respective marquess bears the courtesy title Earl of Rocksavage as heir apparent , the eldest son that of Viscount Malpas .
Previous Viscount Cholmondeley
The uncle of the aforementioned 1st Viscount Cholmondeley, Sir Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Baronet , had already been raised to Viscount Cholmondeley , of Kells in the County of Meath, in the Peerage of Ireland on July 2, 1628 . He was also on March 3, 1646 in the Peerage of Ireland the title of Earl of Leinster and on September 1, 1648 in the Peerage of England the title of Baron Cholmondeley , of Wich Malbank , was bestowed. These titles expired on his death on October 2, 1659.
Lord Great Chamberlain
The Marquess of Cholmondeley is a co-holder of the office of Lord Great Chamberlain , one of the Great Officers of State . With half a share he can exercise the office during the term of office of every second monarch. The other half is divided into small and very small parts. Several marquesses held the office during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II .
