Cholmondeley, like many members of his family, attended Eton College and then studied at the Sorbonne . At the age of 14 he became the honorary page of Queen Elizabeth II , a ceremonial office held by sons of the British nobility and gentry , and exercised this from 1974 to 1976.

Lord Great Chamberlain and membership in the House of Lords

In March 1990, when his father died, Cholmondeley inherited his father's title and property. He also took over the office of Lord Great Chamberlain from him . From a formal point of view, he only holds a 50% share in the office, the second half is divided between a large number of people. However, the office can only be exercised by one person. The right to exercise therefore changes proportionally between the beneficiaries, with the change taking place when the monarch dies. Therefore, if Queen Elizabeth II dies, the Marquess will lose the office.

The Marquess has a prominent position as Lord Great Chamberlain in the respective protocol-based hierarchy of the various parts of the United Kingdom . He is a crossbencher in the House of Lords . On June 4, 1990 he took his seat in the House of Lords for the first time. According to the House of Lords Act 1999 , the incumbent Lord Great Chamberlain is, alongside the Earl Marshal, a member of the House of Lords by virtue of his office, so that he can perform his protocol tasks there, for example at the opening of parliament .

From 1990 to 1991 he was a member of the Works of Art Committee and, during the same period, the House of Lords Offices Committee . In 1992 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk.

Since May 25, 2010 he was on leave of absence for the duration of the legislative period due to a leave of absence granted by the House of Lords .
