Hugh Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Cholmondeley
Hugh Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Cholmondeley ( 1662 - January 18, 1725 ) was an English peer and politician .
life and career
He was the older son of Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Viscount Cholmondeley and his wife Elizabeth Cradock. He studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University . When his father died on May 22, 1681, he inherited his title as 2nd Viscount Cholmondeley .
In 1688 he supported Wilhelm von Oranien-Nassau's claim to the crown. He thanked him by giving him the title of Baron Cholmondeley after his coronation on April 10, 1689 . The barony belonged to the Peerage of England and, in contrast to the Viscountcy , which belonged to the Peerage of Ireland, was connected to a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords . On December 29, 1706, he was also awarded the title Earl of Cholmondeley and Viscount Malpas , also in the Peerage of England . Since he was unmarried and childless, he was awarded all three titles of nobility with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, they could also be passed on to his younger brother George and his male descendants.
From 1702 to 1713 and 1714 to 1725 he was Lord Lieutenant of North Wales , and from 1703 to 1713 and 1714 to 1725 Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire . He was Military Governor of Chester from 1705 to 1713 and from 1714 to 1725 . On March 29, 1705 he was appointed to the Privy Council . From 1708 to 1713 and 1714 to 1725 he was Treasurer of the Household and from 1708 to 1708 Comptroller of the Household .
He died on January 18, 1725 and was buried on January 30, 1725 in Malpas, Cheshire . His brother George inherited his title of nobility.
