Baron Henley is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Great Britain and in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards

The title was first bestowed on May 27, 1760 in the Peerage of Great Britain as Baron Henley , of Grange in the County of Southampton , to Sir Robert Henley . He was Lord Chancellor at the time . On May 19, 1764 he was also raised in the Peerage of Great Britain to Earl of Northington , of Northington in the County of Southampton. Both titles expired on July 5, 1786 when his son, the 2nd Earl, died childless.

The second bestowal took place on November 9, 1799 in the Peerage of Ireland when the husband of the youngest daughter of the 1st Baron of the first bestowal, Sir Morton Eden, was elevated to Baron Henley , of Chardstock in the County of Dorset . He had been the British ambassador to various European courts. His son, the 2nd Baron, took the family name Henley in 1831 . His son, the 3rd Baron, was a member of the British House of Commons for more than 15 years . In honor of his merit, he was awarded the title Baron Northington , of Watford in the County of Northampton , on June 28, 1885 . This dignity belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, in contrast to his Irish title, entitles him to a seat in the British House of Lords .
