Oliver Michael Robert Eden, 8th Baron Henley, 6th Baron Northington (born November 22, 1953 ) is a British Conservative Party politician and a member of the House of Lords .

life and career

He is the eldest son and fourth child of Michael Eden, 7th Baron Henley, 5th Baron Northington , and Nancy Mary Walton. In 1975 he graduated from Durham University with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1977 he was admitted as a barrister by the Middle Temple . When his father died on December 20, 1977, he inherited his title of nobility. In contrast to the Irish title Baron Henley , the title Baron Northington , which belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom , was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords.

Under Margaret Thatcher , he served as Whip in the House of Lords from 1989 to July 1990 . He became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Social Affairs, holding that position under John Major . In 1993 he moved to the Ministry of Labor before moving to the Ministry of Defense in 1994 . In 1995 he was promoted to Minister of State and served in the regrouped Ministry of Education and Labor until the Conservative government lost the 1997 general election .

With the House of Lords Act 1999 , Lord Henley's direct hereditary right to a seat in the House of Lords was also abolished. However, he was chosen as one of those 92 hereditary peers who were allowed to keep their seat in the House of Lords.

After the 2010 general election , he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State to the Ministry of the Environment, Food and Rural Areas in the Cameron I Cabinet . On September 16, 2011, he became Minister of State in the Home Office with responsibility for crime prevention and the reduction of anti-social behavior, succeeding Baroness Browning, who had resigned for health reasons .

He has been married to Caroline Patricia Sharp since October 11, 1984. With her he has three sons and a daughter.
