Earl of Mayo is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland , named after County Mayo .

The Earls family seat is Derryinver near Clifden in County Galway .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was given on June 24, 1785 to the politician John Bourke, 1st Viscount Mayo . He was a Member of the House of Commons in the Irish Parliament from 1720 to 1766 and served as the First Commissioner of Revenue for many years . He had already been raised in the Peerage of Ireland on August 1, 1766 to Baron Naas , of Naas in the County of Kildare , and on January 13, 1781 to Viscount Mayo , of Moneycrower in the County of Mayo. The eldest son of the earl in question bears the courtesy title of Lord Naas as an apparent marriage .

Today's owner of the title is his descendant Charles Bourke as 11th Earl.
