Richard Southwell Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo KP GCSI PC ( February 21, 1822 - February 8, 1872 in Port Blair , Andaman Islands ), was a British - Irish nobleman , politician and statesman .

Life

He was the eldest son of Robert Bourke, 5th Earl of Mayo and his wife Anne Charlotte Jocelyn, a granddaughter of Robert Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Naas until 1867 .

He was a member of the Conservative Party and was a member of the British House of Commons from 1847 to 1868, Member of Parliament for County Kildare from 1847 to 1852 , Coleraine from 1852 to 1857 and Cockermouth from 1857 to 1868 . He was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1852, 1858 to 1859 and from 1866 to 1868 and was inducted into the Privy Council in 1852 . When his father died on August 12, 1867, he inherited his Irish nobility title as 6th Earl of Mayo .

From 1868 he was Governor General and Viceroy of India . As such, he was accepted on January 12, 1869 as Knight Grand Commander in the Order of the Star of India and was ex officio its Grand Master . In addition, he was beaten on January 18, 1869 to the Knight Companion of the Order of St. Patrick . On February 8, 1872, while he was together with his wife, as Governor General and Viceroy of India on an inspection tour in Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Sher Ali Pathan, and by the British Exiled to the penal colony on the Andaman Islands, murdered. Pathan had already served his sentence but was unable to return to India after serving in prison. On the orders of the British Queen Victoria , Pathan was sentenced to death and hanged on Viper Island .

Marriage and offspring

On October 31, 1848, he married the Hon. Blanche Julia Wyndham, daughter of George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield . With her he had seven children:
