John Shore 1st Baron Teignmouth

John Shore, 1st Baron Teignmouth ( September 5, 1751 - February 14, 1834 ) was a British politician and from 1793 to 1798 Governor General of Fort William .

Life

Shore attended Harrow School . In 1769 he became a civil servant in British India . From 1787 to 1789 he was a member of the Supreme Council. In 1793 he succeeded Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis , as Governor General of Fort William. Shore held the post until 1798. During his tenure, he intervened in Avadh and replaced Nawab Wazir Ali Shah with Saadat Ali Khan . He met a mutiny among officers of the Indian Army with concessions.

In 1792 he was raised to Baronet , of Heathcote, in 1798 in the Peerage of Ireland to Baron Teignmouth . Shore was the first President of the British and Foreign Bible Society .

Shore was a friend of the Indologist William Jones and became the second president of the Asiatic Society after his death in 1794 . He published Jones' biography in 1804.

The botanist William Roxburgh named the tropical tree genus Shorea after him .
