The state-run Werner von Siemens grammar school in the Goslar district is one of three grammar schools in Bad Harzburg . In addition to Bad Harzburg, especially Vienenburg , its catchment area is also Goslar . It is named after the inventor Werner von Siemens .

location

The Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium is located right in the heart of the health resort Bad Harzburg, which is located on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains . From the school premises it is only a few minutes' walk to the city center with some shopping opportunities. The grammar school is bordered by three different streets, each with a separate entrance. Adjacent to the site is the town hall, the vicinity of which also offers numerous parking spaces (free of charge for short parking times) that are used by both those approaching the grammar school and the town hall. The noise flows past the edge of the railing .

history

After the founding of the Harzburg Private School Society in 1869 by fathers of the families of Neustadt (the name for Bad Harzburg at the time) and Bündheim , the Ducal Consistory in Wolfenbüttel approved that the children could be taught by the theology candidate, Gustav Vogel , from Easter onwards . In 1869 the candidate Rothe took over the private lessons, followed in 1870 by Julius Klingemann, who, after approval of the private school on October 5, 1872, became the first director. The private school developed into a Progymnasium under the direction of Friedrich Koldewey . When this development was completed eleven years later, the transition to the sponsorship of the city of Bad Harzburg followed. In 1918 the first graduation examination took place, but no longer in the Progymnasium, but in the expanded Reformrealgymnasium. After the Second World War, classes were resumed on December 13, 1945. Since 1969 the school has been called Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium. The first high school diploma in the reformed upper school was written in 1978.

During the Expo in 2000, the installation of a sound sculpture with a sound axis and a flaschophony took place at the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium. There was also a performance documented by the Guinness Book of Records .

Outdoor facilities

There are three different outdoor areas for schoolchildren: On the one hand, the school yard, where you can find sports facilities such as B. a basketball hoop, the beach volleyball and soccer field, on the other hand the Kastanienhof with table tennis tables, there is also the Brunnenhof, which can only be used by high school students. A wide variety of art installations designed by different generations of students are spread across the entire school grounds.

building

The new building at the grammar school, which was completed in mid-November 2013 (left half). This is used for a new wood pellet heating system .

The grammar school consists of three buildings: the main building, a wing with rooms for specialist teaching ("Fachtrakt") and the old building in which the school began, as well as other administrative buildings. Today's main building was inaugurated in 1928 and expanded in 1956. In the same year the gym was built. The inauguration took place on November 18, 1957 in the presence of District President Friedrich August Knost . In 1969 the school was given its current name and the specialist wing opened. Ten years later it was given an additional floor. The auditorium was built in 1981 and 1982, the gymnasium built in 1988 and 1989, inaugurated on November 10, 1989 and used as night quarters for GDR citizens who arrived from the East Harz after the fall of the Wall from the following day. A cafeteria was set up in the main building in 1994, which was replaced by an extension in 2009. The new cafeteria opened on February 3, 2010. In addition to lunch, it also offers small snacks in the morning. In addition, the school bell was replaced by a school gong in 2010.

New buildings and extensions

In mid-November 2013, an extension was completed that serves for the school's newly installed wood pellet heating system, which was installed for cost and environmental reasons.

An extension with six classrooms is planned for 2020. In response to the increasing number of pupils and the switch back to the G9 , the district of Goslar decided in September 2018 to implement this plan with an estimated cost of five million euros. The planning costs for the 2019 budget are estimated at 250,000 euros.

Special teaching offers

Open all-day school

At the beginning of the 2016/2017 school year, the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium is officially open all-day school and was able to expand the range in the afternoon. Under the motto “Everyone can - nobody has to”, schoolchildren have the opportunity to take part in afternoon activities voluntarily and guided by interests. Since the regular lessons for lower secondary level end at lunch break, a wide variety of offers can be taken advantage of in the afternoon.

Lesson structure

Two subjects that are not available at other schools are the subjects “Media” and “Self-determined learning” (SBL). With a slightly different design of the schedule, these subjects are also offered without increasing the daily teaching time. The otherwise often found length of a lesson of 45 minutes is shortened to 40 minutes, whereby two 40-minute units are combined into a block of 80 minutes. The time gained in this way is used for subject-related and interdisciplinary work in the subjects “Media” and “SBL”.

media

The subject “Media” is taught at the Werner von Siemens Gymnasium from grades 5 to 11 for one double hour per week. In this subject, the focus is on using computers, smartphones and other digital media. Subjects in the subject are, for example, software, hardware, internet, security aspects, etc. In this way, comprehensive media skills are built up, with the development and application of different subject areas also with reference to the “traditional” subjects. Knowledge from media lessons can then be incorporated into regular specialist lessons ( e.g. in German, art or mathematics).

Self-determined learning (SBL)

The subject “SBL” is taught at the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium from grades 5 to 10 consistently for one double hour per week. From grade 11, two double lessons are available for this. Self-determined learning (SBL) consists of four elements. These flow into the subject in different proportions, depending on the grade.

In grades 5 and 6 in particular, the focus is on learning methods and work techniques. These methods are deepened in the school years afterwards. The methods are not only used in SBL, but also in specialist teaching. The methods can be practiced using tasks from specialist lessons. These tasks can also be tailored to the individual learning needs of individual students. Time is then available within SBL to complete these tasks.

In the SBL subject, social skills are also trained with the help of the “ Lions Quest - Growing Up” program . In project work, one deals with a comprehensive task over a longer period of time. This can also be participation in external competitions. Projects often make it possible to combine areas of knowledge from different subjects. Projects are therefore complex in terms of planning and implementation. This is why project lessons are included in SBL, especially in higher grades (from grade 9).

In the qualification phase , SBL students have individual learning time. Tutorials can also be worked on or advice from teachers can be taken advantage of in subject-specific lessons that are accompanied by teachers and can be freely selected within the offer.

Educational work and offers

Integration and inclusion

When the fifth grades started school in the summer of 2006, the school concept was enriched by a further point, that of target-different integration . The application for integrative teaching in secondary schools was accepted with a large majority at the general conference of the grammar school. Since then (until 2014) four mentally, one of them also physically, disabled children ( Down syndrome ) successfully participated in everyday school life. In order to ensure the best possible learning success for all pupils in the integration or inclusion classes, there are both separate lessons tailored to the children as well as joint lessons in class. If necessary, the children are also looked after by special educators. In 2007, the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium received the School of the Year award from Unicum magazine for its special achievement in integrating mentally handicapped pupils in general schools .

Scientific support and advice is provided by Jutta Schoeler in this context.

Already before 2006 and in the following years, pupils from the most varied of specializations were mostly integrated in a targeted manner. With the official start of inclusion in Lower Saxony, the respective students receive the status of included (and not integrated) students.

social learning

In addition to the acquisition of knowledge, the high school attaches great importance to the area of social skills and personality development. For this reason, the Lions Quest program is firmly anchored in the school. In addition, pupils are trained as mediators (dispute arbitrators) who are given to the classes as “sponsors”, who accompany them intensively in the first two years at school and can also intervene in the event of a conflict. In addition, the sponsored students organize social activities for students of all grades, also with effects beyond the school. For this comprehensive social commitment, the sponsored students were awarded the youth development award of the district of Goslar by the district administrator in 2015.

Suitable students can work as tutors, supported by teachers, offer courses for weaker students in English, German, mathematics and French as well as look after the library, act as moderators in the school intranet, at school events in the organization or as folders and also in the student council become active.

Projects with surrounding senior citizens' homes (e.g. computer courses, choir or theater performances) are integrated into the classroom or in working groups. In cooperation with the German Bone Marrow Donor Database (DKMS) and the Lions Club Walburga (Bad Harzburg), a typing campaign took place at the end of 2009.

Cooperations

School cooperation partners have been the Lower Saxony Boarding High School (NIG) in Bad Harzburg and the Braunlage High School for more than 30 years . The cooperation includes, in particular, joint courses in upper secondary school, which are taught either at the NIG or at the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium. In younger classes, pupils from all the cooperating schools work on joint projects and activities such as Picus Day and Forest Adventure Day. In addition, the cooperation takes place on a personal level, since regular secondments of teachers to the different schools should contribute to an exchange and an improved provision of lessons. To improve the transition from primary school to grammar school, there is an exchange with the surrounding primary schools. The cooperation includes regular meetings of the teachers in the fourth and fifth grades and mutual visits to the respective schools.

A cooperation partner in the field of culture is the Mönchehaus Museum for Modern Art . As part of this cooperation, discussions are held annually with the current winner of the Goslarer Kaiserring .

At the beginning of 2011, a cooperation agreement was signed with the non-profit telc GmbH , a subsidiary of the German Adult Education Association. This made the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium a model school in this area. It was announced that working groups would offer preparations for external language exams analogous to the Common European Framework of Reference for several years . As part of the cooperation, the school will produce an annual report, in particular on preparation and experiences with the school-specific offers.

In addition, the school has been officially cooperating with the Siemens company in Braunschweig since 2007 . The cooperation had previously been tested in a partnership. This cooperation opens up opportunities for professional development outside of school.

Study and professional preparation

In addition to the pre-vocational teaching units integrated into the subject-specific lessons, pupils are offered an extensive range of study and career-oriented events. There are, for example, lectures on the topic of career and study choice or the training and study exchange of the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium. Information on the topics of career and study choice as well as job advertisements are provided on the school intranet.

All pupils in grade 10 complete a three-week internship as a career orientation. They also take part in a full-day application and introduction training. In the pilot phase for “BOGS” (vocational orientation in the district of Goslar), the school participates in the “BENIMM” and “READY” programs in 2015. In preparation for the internship in January 2015, students in grade 10 received an insight into rules of conduct in the world of work, while grade 9 students take part in a five-day professional aptitude test. Visits take in high school in Berufsinformationszentrum place (BIS), there are orientation sessions and days of attendance at the school through the guidance counselor of the employment agency .

As part of the study orientation, trips to the university information days of the TU Clausthal and the University of Göttingen take place. In addition, former students return regularly to the school to speak about their universities or studies. In the obligatory seminar subject , working techniques are practiced as a propaedeutic science.

Working groups

There is a varied range of working groups. This offer existed before the official status of an open all-day school was achieved and was traditionally used by around 2/3 of the respective student body. With the change of status, the range of working groups will be further expanded. In the sense of the open all-day school, the selection is still voluntary, participation in the afternoon program (with working groups, support and care offers) is therefore not mandatory.

In particular, the musical and artistic area with two choirs, an orchestra, a band, an art and a theater group stands out. As part of the Braunschweig School Theater Week, the theater group also performs theater plays written within the school. In the 1996/97 school year, the WvS was awarded the title School of the Year by the school magazine Chance as the winner of an art and music project .

The musical work has a long tradition. For example, there were television recordings with singers and flute players as early as 1963, which were broadcast in the NDR's Christmas program. The choirs perform several times a year, for example at the summer concert and Christmas concert in the Luther Church . In 2007 they also supported Achim Reichel and the NDR in recording old German folk songs in a new rock version. There were also several appearances with the Theater für Niedersachsen in Hildesheim or at the Kaiserpfalz concerts.

European school

The Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium offers various offers and activities in the field of foreign languages, the integration of European topics as well as intercultural cooperation within and outside of the regular lessons. With these offers, the criteria are met to be allowed to bear the official designation " European School in Lower Saxony".

foreign languages

Foreign language teaching begins in the 5th grade with English as the first foreign language. At the beginning of the 6th grade, either French or Latin is added as a second foreign language. The second foreign language is selected in the 2nd semester of the 5th grade, so that when registering at the school (in the 2nd semester of the 4th grade) no decision has to be made about the lessons from grade 6 onwards. With the beginning of the upper level, it is possible to add another foreign language, also at the cooperating school, the Lower Saxony boarding school. Newly immigrated pupils who are admitted in the course of lower secondary level can, if necessary, prove additional foreign languages (as a substitute for a compulsory foreign language) by means of a language assessment test.

In the area of working groups and exchange trips, there is also the possibility (with a sufficient number of participants) to learn the basics of other languages (Italian, Russian and Spanish). Within the AG offer, there is also the possibility of taking external language exams, especially in English ( telc ) and French ( DELF ).

Rides

School life is characterized by an extensive, educational travel program. This includes one-day excursions to extracurricular learning locations as well as class trips and study trips (the latter mostly to other European countries). There are also trips to Rome and Paris as part of the French and Latin classes. The choir trip and the alpine skiing trip (the latter to Austria) are carried out in working groups. There are also several partner schools abroad that are regularly attended.

Exchange trips

USA exchange

Since 1996, every two years within the framework of GAPP ( German American Partnership Program ) there has been an exchange between the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium Bad Harzburg and an American partner school. First, it was Severna Park High School in Maryland . The partnership was dormant between 2011 and 2013, but was revived in 2014. In 2011, GAPP launched a new partnership with Upper Moreland High School in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania . Thus there are active partnerships with two schools in the USA. The trips to the partner schools take place on an annual basis.

Up to 20 students in grades 10 and 11 can take part in the exchange. During the three-week stay in the USA , which is mostly organized in March / April, there are a few other activities on the program in addition to everyday American school life and family life. These include a stay of several days in New York City , visits to Washington, DC and Philadelphia as well as a trip to Lancaster County (Pennsylvania) to visit the Amish . The return visit of the Americans takes place before the summer vacation.

In addition, there is the possibility of an individual exchange of individual students within the GAP program. They can attend the partner school for up to one school year. This option has been used several times by all participating schools in recent years.

A last exchange took place in 2017. Due to the staffing situation at American high schools, there are currently no exchange activities. In order to still make trips to English-speaking countries, there has been a trip to England every two years since 2019.

Pole exchange

The Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium has offered an annual exchange with Polish partner schools since 1993. Initially, this exchange led to Sklarska Poneba (former Schreiberhau ), since 1998 to Bydgoszcz (formerly Bromberg) and since 2014 to Poznan . In contrast to other types of exchange, the focus is not on improving the language in a foreign language that has been learned for a number of years, but on international understanding between Poles and Germans. Since most of the German exchange students have no knowledge of Polish, the language barriers are initially large, but they are quickly overcome thanks to activities.

Comenius and Erasmus +

In 2011–2013 a bilateral Comenius project took place with a partner school in Italy (the Liceo Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei in Civitavecchia ). The project was entitled "One Hundred Years of Being a Woman". In addition to working on the topic of the project itself (in which English was the working language), lessons were also given in the language of the partner country at the participating schools as part of the project.

In 2013–2015, a multilateral Comenius project with the title “EU Gusto” took place. The participating partner schools are the College Louis Jouvet in Saint-Agrève , France, the Istituto Compreso Tommaso Aversa in Mistretta , Italy and the Gazi Ahmet Ortaokulu in Niksar , Tokat , Turkey. French was chosen as the working language for this project.

2018-2020 is the title of the Erasmus + project "A European Heritage of the Past, Present and Future". The partner schools are in Poland (Braciejowce, near Olkusz ) and France ( Chalais and Le Havre ).

Teachers also made several visits as part of Comenius and Erasmus programs. For example, teachers from the Werner von Siemens grammar school received further training at various European schools and the school hosted teachers from various European countries.

Italy exchange

The Liceo Bodoni in Saluzzo , Piedmont was the partner school in Italy. In particular, 9th grade students took part in this annual trip. The goals were, for example, the expansion of knowledge of the country, i.e. getting to know modern Italy, but the content was also a project work “In the footsteps of the Romans”. Even though basic knowledge of Italian was imparted in preparation for the exchange, the working language on both sides was still English.

England exchange

Since 1996 there has been an exchange with the partner schools in Hitchin ( England ) every year . The last exchange so far took place in 2009. Contacts still exist, but there are currently no exchange trips.

public relation

Parents Association

The association of parents and friends of the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium Bad Harzburg serves to maintain contact between parents, former students, friends of the school and the school management with the teaching staff. He not only financially supports activities at the school, but also appears through public relations work, for example through discussions at the school with various ministers of education, such as Renate Jürgens-Pieper (2000), Bernd Busemann (2006), Elisabeth Heister-Neumann im Year 2008 as well as Bernd Althusmann (2010).

School newspaper

The school newspaper Profil was founded in 1964 . This makes it the oldest continuously published school newspaper in Lower Saxony. The Association of Young Editors of Lower Saxony e. V. describes Profil as the oldest school newspaper in Germany. It appears four times a year just before the holidays and is created in a study group. Former employees included Michael Sauga , now Berlin correspondent for the news magazine Der Spiegel, and Jörg Albrecht , editor at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .
