Seminar subject

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The seminar subject is a school subject at general or vocational high schools . This subject is available in various federal states in Germany, sometimes with different names. In Lower Saxony, Thuringia and Saarland it is called “seminar subject”, in Bavaria “ science propaedeutic seminar ” (short: “W-seminar” or “propaedeutic course”), in Baden-Württemberg and Berlin “ seminar course ”, in Bremen “methods”, in North Rhine-Westphalia "project course".

aims

However, the objectives of these differently named subjects are very similar: They would like to introduce subject-specific content and methods and convey general academic working methods. The seminar subject should lead to the expansion of competencies and prepare for work in a specialist degree. This objective follows the agreement of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on the “design of the upper secondary level in the upper secondary level”, according to which teaching in the upper secondary level should not only be subject-related but also interdisciplinary. According to the KMK, the aim of the lessons is, in addition to acquiring the general university entrance qualification, the general ability to study, which also includes an introduction to scientific ways of thinking and working (science propaedeutics).

Content, methods and working methods

In order to achieve the set goals, interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary complex problems and the practice of various methods are in the foreground in the seminar subject. Different forms of work and different methods of presenting results are used. The work process should also be organized independently by the students in a given time frame. Required and promoted competencies are, for example, researching and analyzing, structuring and processing research results and presenting the results in a way that is appropriate to the topic and addressee.

Depending on the orientation, a seminar subject can contain the following topics (selection): learning strategies , techniques of information processing and intellectual debate as well as presentation techniques and exam preparation for oral exams. In addition, each student writes a technical paper in the seminar subject .

Lower Saxony

The seminar subject in Lower Saxony is mandatory in the qualification phase up to the Abitur . It is taught every two hours for three semesters.

Legal basis

The legal basis for today's seminar subject can be found in the "Ordinance on upper secondary school" (VO-GO) of February 17, 2005, in the "Ordinance on evening grammar school and college" (VO-AK) of May 2, 2005, in the "Ordinance on the qualifications in the upper secondary school, in the specialist grammar school, in the evening grammar school and in the college" (AVO-GOFAK) of May 19, 2005 as well as in the decree provisions supplementing the ordinances (EB) of May 19, 2005. In August 2006 it was taught in upper secondary school and in college.

The technical work assigned to the seminar subject today was prepared in one of the advanced courses from 1997 (then regulated in the “Ordinance on the gymnasiale Oberstufe and Fachgymnasium” (VO-GOF) of May 26, 1997 and the “Decree Supplementary Provisions for the Ordinance on the Gymnasiale Upper level and the specialized high school “(EB-VO-GOF) 1997). With the creation of the seminar subject, this has passed into its area.

rating

As in other subjects, the assessment is based on written work and participation in class. It should be noted, however, that no exams are written in the seminar subject. In one half of the school year, a specialist thesis is written; in the other half of the school year, exams take the place of equivalent assessments of student performance (written assignments, projects, presentations, oral and written exams or other presentations). Their evaluation is included in the overall evaluation of the half-year with 50%.

When adding the points to the overall qualification (for the Abitur), the first semester with the specialist thesis and an adjacent semester must be selected.
