Seminar course

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A seminar course is a so-called special learning achievement at general or vocational high schools. It was introduced in Baden-Württemberg in the 1998/1999 school year and must at least be offered by all high schools.

procedure

As a rule, the course, starting in the first half of the course level (also called 11.1), lasts for one school year and ends at the end of the eleventh school year. With three school hours per week (3x45 minutes) it falls into the so-called elective area and is a voluntary additional service. Depending on the credit variant, it can be assigned to one of the three task fields. Various methods (teamwork, presentation, project planning, etc.) and the scientific development of a main topic are trained. The evaluation of the course is made up of three components: teaching grade, documentation (written elaboration) and colloquium (mostly public presentation with subsequent questioning). The course runs under a roughly outlined topic, which is usually determined by the students, and is then broken down into various specific topic blocks that are worked on by individual students or groups of students under the guidance and with the help of the course instructors.

Task fields and topic examples

All school subjects (except sport) can be assigned to one of the following three task areas:

  • Task area I : linguistic-literary-artistic (German, English, French, Latin, Spanish and other languages as well as music and visual arts)
  • Task II : social science (history, geography, social studies, religious theory / ethics)
  • Task III : mathematical-scientific-technical (mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry)

A topic that can be transferred to different fields of activity, depending on the specialization, would be the Middle East, for example. Both social and natural science aspects can be examined here (e.g. petroleum, the position of women, etc.). Other examples of interdisciplinary topics would be roads of the world, nutrition, right-wing extremism, America or renewable energies.

Calculation of the overall grade

The overall grade from the lessons (semesters 11.1 and 11.2) counts twice as much as the colloquium and the documentation (ratio 2: 1: 1).

Credit options

The seminar course (or the special learning achievement in general) can be included in the Abitur in various ways:

  • It can replace the presentation test (fifth examination subject) in the Abitur, whereby the overall grade is included in block II (Abitur examination) in fourfold valuation like the presentation examination.
  • It can be included in double valuation in block I (course grades from the four semesters).
