Karl Friedrich Ernst Koldewey (born April 26, 1839 in Barmke , Helmstedt district , † September 16, 1909 in Braunschweig ) was a German educator and historian .

Life

Koldewey was born in Barmke in 1839 as the son of a teacher and cantor. After attending the Helmstedt high school from 1851 to 1858, Koldewey studied theology in Göttingen and Halle until 1861, as well as philology, philosophy and history as minor subjects. He passed the first theological exam in 1861 and the second in 1863. He worked for a short time as a private tutor before he started working as an assistant teacher at the " Great School " in Wolfenbüttel from autumn 1862 . In 1869 he was appointed senior teacher . The state examination for the top high-school teaching level he passed in 1871. In 1873 he was at the University of Jena to the Dr. phil. PhD . From 1882 to 1884 he headed the grammar school in Holzminden . In 1884 he moved to Braunschweig, where he became director of the Herzogliches Realgymnasium , today's New High School . In 1891 he moved to the Martino Katharineum as director . In the same year he became a member of the ducal high school commission, which enabled him to have a significant say in the country's school system. He was appointed school councilor in 1897 and high school councilor in 1903.

His son Friedrich Koldewey was the headmaster at the Progymnasium in Bad Harzburg .

Works (selection)

Koldewey is the author of academic papers on church and school history, especially on the Duchy of Braunschweig. For his work on the Reformation of the State of Braunschweig he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by the University of Jena in 1885 . Other research topics were the life and work of Abbot Jerusalem and the history of the former University of Helmstedt . His two-volume work Braunschweigische Schulordnung was published in 1886 and 1890 in the series Monumenta Germaniae Paedagogica edited by Karl Kehrbach .

Honors

On May 8, 1895, the 58th birthday of the Prince Regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig Albrecht von Prussia , Koldewey was personally awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Henry the Lion in the assembly hall of the Martino-Katharineum .
