William Denison
Sir William Thomas Denison KCB (born May 3, 1804 in London , England , † January 19, 1871 in East Sheen , (then part of Surrey , now part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames )) was a British governor.
Denison was born in London in 1804 as one of 14 children. He was Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land ( Tasmania ) from 1847 to 1855 and Governor of New South Wales from 1855 to 1861 . On January 22, 1860, he left Sydney to take office as governor of the province of Madras . In November 1863, after the death of Lord Elgin , he held the office of Governor General and Viceroy of India for two months . In March 1863 he returned to Great Britain.
