Marie Bashir

Dame Marie Bashir (born December 1, 1930 in Narrandera ) is an Australian politician and doctor.

Life

Bashir studied medicine and psychiatry at the University of Sydney . As the successor to Gordon Samuels , she was governor of the Australian state of New South Wales between March 1, 2001 and October 1, 2014 . This makes her the second longest-serving governor of New South Wales. Between 2007 and December 2012 she was Chancellor of the University of Sydney, succeeding Kim Santow . She is married to former rugby player and Lord Mayor of Sydney Nicholas Shehadie and has three children.
