John Hunter (born August 29, 1737 in Leith , Edinburgh , † March 13, 1821 in London ) was a Scottish pioneer in Australia and from 1795 to 1800 Governor of New South Wales .

On the return trip with the Waaksamheyd , groups of islands discovered a long time ago ( Stewart and Lord Howe Islands ) were passed and the Duke of York Island was explored more closely. As governor, he sponsored the expeditions of George Bass and Matthew Flinders .
The Hunter River in New South Wales is named after him.
