Somerset Lowry-Corry, 4th Earl Belmore
Somerset Lowry-Corry, 4th Earl Belmore , GCMG , (born April 9, 1835 in London , † April 6, 1913 at Castle Coole , Enniskillen ) was an Irish nobleman and Governor of New South Wales .
Lowry-Corry was born on April 9, 1835, the eldest son of Armar Lowry-Corry, 3rd Earl Belmore and his wife Emily Louise Shepherd in London. After the early death of his father, the 3rd Earl Belmore, he inherited the title Earl Belmore in 1845 . Lowry-Corry attended Eton College and Cambridge University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1856 and his master's degree in 1857 . In the same year he was elected by the Irish peers as one of their 28 representatives in the British House of Lords , of which he was a member until his death. In 1861 Lowry-Corry married Anna Elizabeth Honoria Gladstone. The marriage resulted in 13 children.
Lowry-Corry was Governor of New South Wales from January 8, 1868 to February 21, 1872. On his return to the United Kingdom , he was appointed Knight Commander in 1872 and finally Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1890 . He was Lord Lieutenant of County Tyrone from 1892 until his death . On April 6, 1913, Lowry-Corry died after a long illness at Castle Coole, the family seat of the Earls Belmore.
