Victor Albert George Child-Villiers, 7th Earl of Jersey GCB GCMG PC DL JP (born March 20, 1845 in London , † May 31, 1915 in Osterley Park ) was a British politician .

Life

He was born the eldest son of George Child-Villiers, 6th Earl of Jersey , and Julia, daughter of British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel . He attended Eton College and then studied at Balliol College , Oxford . In October 1859, at the age of 14, he inherited the earliest dignity of his father, who died just three weeks after he had inherited the title from his father. He became the main owner of the family bank Child & Co.

Villiers served as Lord-in-Waiting in the government of Benjamin Disraeli between 1875 and 1877 . In 1879 he became Lord Lieutenant for Oxfordshire . He held this office until his death. He returned to government in 1889 when Lord Salisbury appointed him Paymaster General . He held this office until 1890. Three years later he became a member of the Privy Council .

From January 1891 to March 1893 he was Governor of New South Wales .

Lord Jersey married Margaret Elizabeth on September 19, 1872 (born October 29, 1849 - May 22, 1945), a daughter of William Leigh, 2nd Baron Leigh . They had six children together. Villiers was an active Freemason. When he died in 1915, his eldest son, George Child-Villiers, 8th Earl of Jersey , inherited the title.
