Viper Island is a small island off South Andaman Island in Navy Bay near Port Blair . The island of about 0.5 km², which belongs to the Andamans , used to serve as a prison for particularly unruly prisoners and freedom fighters from the Empire of India . Among other things, the murderer of Richard Bourke , the sixth Earl of Mayo, was hanged here. Today you can still see the ruins of the prison and a gallows hill .
The island's name comes from the British ship Viper , which ran aground off the coast in the mid-18th century.
