Earl of Enniskillen
Earl of Enniskillen is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland . The title refers to the Northern Irish town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh .
Award
The title was created on August 18, 1789 for William Cole, 1st Viscount Enniskillen . He had already been raised to Viscount Enniskillen on July 20, 1776, also in the Peerage of Ireland . He had also inherited the title of 2nd Baron Mountflorence , of Florence Court in the County of Fermanagh, from his father in 1767 , which had been awarded to this on September 8, 1760 in the Peerage of Ireland.
His son, the 2nd Earl, was also awarded the title of Baron Grinstead , of Grinstead in the County of Wiltshire , on August 11, 1815 . This belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 .
The historic home of the Earls was Florence Court in County Fermanagh, which the 5th Earl sold to the National Trust in 1953.
Today's title holder has been his descendant Andrew Cole as 7th Earl since 1989 .
