Earl of Mornington
Earl of Mornington is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland , which is now a subordinate title of the respective Duke of Wellington .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on October 2, 1760 for Garret Wellesley, 2nd Baron Mornington , father of the famous Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington . This was a major philanthropist of his time and belonged to the Wellesley family . Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Wellesley , of Dangan Castle in the County of Meath . As early as 1758 he had inherited the title of Baron Mornington from his father , which he had been awarded on July 9, 1746. All three titles belong to the Peerage of Ireland.
Other titles
The second earl, Richard Wellesley , was given the title of Baron Wellesley , of Wellesley in the County of Somerset , in the Peerage of Great Britain on October 20, 1797 . In contrast to the Irish titles, this title was linked to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . On December 2, 1799 he was raised to Marquess Wellesley , of Norragh, in the Peerage of Ireland. Both titles expired when he died in 1842 without a living male descendant.
The future third earl, William Wellesley-Pole , was raised to Baron Maryborough , of Maryborough in the Queen's County , of the Irish nobility on July 17, 1821 . These titles expired with the death of his grandson, the fifth earl, in 1863.
After the death of the fifth earl, the titles fell to the Dukes of Wellington, which they still have as a subordinate title. Today it is also used as a courtesy title by the eldest son of the heir to the title.
