Henry Wellesley, 3rd Duke of Wellington
Henry Wellesley, 3rd Duke of Wellington (born April 5, 1846 in Apsley House , Mayfair , London , † June 8, 1900 in Stratfield Saye House in Basingstoke , Hampshire ), was a British officer , peer and politician .
Life
He came from the Wellesley family and was a paternal grandson of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington . He was the second-born son of Lord Charles Wellesley from his marriage to Augusta Sophia Anne Pierrepont. His older brother Arthur died in infancy on July 7, 1846.
He attended Eton College from 1859 to 1863 . On May 16, 1865 , he bought an officer position as Ensign and Lieutenant of the Grenadier Guards . With the Grenadier Guards he bought himself a promotion to lieutenant and captain on August 1, 1868 , he was from May 17, 1871 to February 23, 1874 head of shooting training ( Instructor of Musketry ) and he became captain on April 1, 1876 and promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel . Around 1881 he was appointed Major and Lieutenant-Colonel, Deputy Commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards. On June 28, 1882, he sold his post with the Grenadier Guards and retired from the British Army. On November 22, 1884 he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Brigade of the Southern Division of the Royal Artillery and on April 10, 1886 also Honorary Colonel of the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment .
In the general election in 1874 he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Conservative Party for Borough Andover . He did not run for the general election in 1880 and resigned from parliament. On the death of his uncle Arthur Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington , he inherited his title of nobility as 3rd Duke of Wellington along with subordinate titles on August 13, 1884 and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .
In December 1885, he was the British special envoy to the funeral of King Alfonso XII. posted from Spain .
Since March 7, 1882 he was married to Evelyn Katrine “Kitty” Gwenfra Williams († 1939), a daughter of the House of Commons and Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Peers Williams (1795-1875). He died in 1900 and was buried in the crypt of Saint Paul's Cathedral . Since he remained childless, his younger brother Arthur Charles Wellesley inherited his title of nobility.
