history

The family is descended from Sir Henry Colley (also Cowley, † 1584) from Rutland , who came to Ireland as an English officer under Henry VIII and bought Carbury Castle in County Kildare there in 1554 . His great-great-great-grandson Richard Colley (1690-1758) was appointed heir to his cousin Garrett Wesley or Wellesley in 1728 on condition that he accept his name and his coat of arms. In 1746 he was raised to Baron Mornington by King George II . His only son Garrett Wesley, 2nd Baron Mornington (1735-1781), was raised in 1760 to Earl of Mornington and Viscount Wellesley . He died on May 22, 1781, leaving five sons from his marriage to the Hon. Anne Hill-Trevor, daughter of 1st Viscount Dungannon, who later changed their family name to Wellesley :

  1. Richard Colley-Wellesley (1760-1842) inherited his father as 2nd Earl of Mornington in 1781, made a career as Governor General of the East Indies (1797-1805) and in 1799 was raised to Marquess Wellesley . He died without a legitimate heir.
  2. William Wellesley-Pole (1763-1845) was raised to Baron Maryborough in 1821 and inherited his older brother in 1842 as 3rd Earl of Mornington. He left a son, William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, 4th Earl of Mornington (1788-1857) and his grandson, William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, 5th Earl of Mornington (1813-1863) died male line of offspring.
  3. Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), made a career as a British field marshal in the Napoleonic Wars, was raised to Viscount Wellington in 1809 , in 1812 to Earl of Wellington and Marquess of Wellington and in 1814 to Duke of Wellington . His older son Arthur Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington (1807-1884) also inherited his nephew as the 6th Earl of Mornington in 1863 but died childless, leaving him with the two sons of his younger brother Lord Charles Wellesley (1808-1858), Henry Wellesley (1846-1900) and Arthur Charles (1849-1934) successively succeeded as 3rd and 4th Duke of Wellington. Descendant lines of the latter exist to this day, the head of the family has been Charles Wellesley, 9th Duke of Wellington (* 1945) since 2014 .
  4. Rev. Gerard Valerian Wellesley (1770–1848) was Canon of Durham, Rector of Bishop-Wearmouth and Chaplain to the Queen. His male line of descendants expired in 1992.
