Charles Wellesley

Lord Charles Wellesley ( January 16, 1808 - October 9, 1858 ) was a British general and politician .

Life

He was the younger of the two children of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington , and his wife Catherine Pakenham . He was at Eton College educated and studied from 1824 at Christ Church College of Oxford University and in 1826 at the Trinity College of Cambridge University .

In parallel to his studies, he joined the British Army in January 1824 and bought a command as Ensign of the 82nd Regiment of Foot . After he had been placed on half pay , he moved in May 1826 as Ensign to the 75th Regiment of Foot and in the same month as Cornet to the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards . In November 1828 he was promoted to lieutenant and in February 1830 to captain . In June 1830 he moved to the Rifle Brigade as captain and in May 1831 to the 1st or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards . In September 1831 he was promoted to major and in October 1833 he moved to the 87th Regiment of Foot and in the same month on to the 5th Regiment of Foot . In December 1837 he resigned from the latter regiment and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He later became Lieutenant-Colonel of the 15th Regiment of Foot from which he retired in March 1845. From then on he was under half pay and was not assigned to any regiment; in November 1851 he was promoted to colonel and in December 1856 to major general.

For Queen Victoria he held the court office of Chief Equerry and Clerk Marshal from September 1841 to July 1846 .

He was elected several times to the British House of Commons and was MP for the constituency of Hampshire Southern from 1842 to 1852 and for Windsor from 1852 to 1855 . He belonged to the Conservative Party founded by Robert Peel .

He died blind on October 9, 1858.

Marriage and offspring

On July 9, 1844, he married Augusta Sophia Anne Pierrepont († 1893), daughter of the diplomat, Rt. Hon. Henry Pierrepont, and granddaughter of Charles Pierrepont, 1st Earl Manvers . He had six children with her:
