Earl Cowley is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created on April 11, 1857 for Henry Wellesley, 2nd Baron Cowley . He was a member of the Wellesley family and was a nephew of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington , and Richard Colley-Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley . He had worked in the diplomatic service for more than 30 years and at the time of his elevation to Earl he had already held the most important diplomatic office in his country, namely that of ambassador in Paris, for five years . He was to remain in this post for ten more years. Together with the earl title , he was given the subordinate title Viscount Dangan , of Dangan in the County of Meath .
